 I Face a Moment of Truth

I remember the first day I ever consulted with the Yankees, a couple of years prior to that day I met Jeter.

As I drove to the Yankee complex it all started to hit me: I was to meet with their five minor league managers to discuss the mental game of baseball.  Just me and five of the top leaders of the winningest organization in the sport I’d loved all my life.

They would be sitting around a boardroom table in their pristine white Yankee pinstripes, the most famous uniform in all of American sports. 

My heart quickened as my head flooded with questions (and my gut filled with doubt):

“What would they be like?”  “Would they like me?”  “Would they be open to talking about this stuff or would they sit there and stare at me?” “Or worse, would they laugh me out of the room?”

One of my life-long dreams was to be a full-time sport psychology coach for a Major League team.  If this meeting went well it could lead to fulfillment of the dream…

As you can imagine, my mind racing around like that got me feeling pretty anxious.  I could feel my stomach turn over, my breath shorten, and my muscles tense.  Not exactly my peak performance state…

Fortunately I caught myself. 

I knew exactly what to do to – and I did it. 

Moments later I felt totally confident.  My heart was still pumping, but my anxiousness had turned into excitement.  I had turned my fears into confidence.

I was in complete control of the meeting and was later hired to that full-time position.

 You Can Take Control of Your Own Confidence

Each day, people like you are learning to create their own confidence.  They’re learning that how good they feel, how motivated they are to reach their goals, and how enjoyable life is don’t have to be left to chance.  Their confidence doesn’t have to be controlled by the results they are getting.

I Need to Come Clean

Before I answer the obvious question (“How did those people create confidence that turbo charged their lives?”), I feel like this report is sounding a bit too rosy.  While everything I’ve said is true, I feel compelled to share something very personal, the “rest of the story” about the Yankees. 

This story also explains how I came to be able to help people build powerful confidence so fast.

There were many challenges working in that pressure environment and my exposure and access were more limited than I felt they needed to be in order for me to be effective.  But it was a dream come true to be talking to players and coaches that had that magical NY on their hats. 

Then one day late in the season I was called to the “office.”  I was told “Mr. Steinbrenner has decided to not continue the program.” 

In other words, “You’re fired.”

For the first time in my life I’d failed at something I really tried for.

The people I worked with said not to take it personally, that I’d done a great job and it’s just the nature of the Yankee organization.  That was nice, but I felt I should have been able to overcome the constraints I had faced. 

I Go on the Emotional “Disabled List”

I was hurting.  And to be honest, my confidence was shaken.  In that “New York, New York” song Sinatra sings: “If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere…” 

Well, I didn’t make it there, and it stung.

Getting fired by the Yankees wasn’t only an emotional blow, it was a financial blow.  I was now sitting in Tampa with no income and no contacts.

When I was a tenured college professor I got a paycheck every two weeks no matter how well I performed.  Out here it’s the Law of the Jungle: If I help people succeed I get paid.  If I don’t, I’m toast. 

No longer was I in the Ivory Tower of academia talking about theories of what “should” work.  I needed to produce results fast or our two-year-old son would go hungry.

Another Moment of Truth

Everything I knew and taught was now put to the ultimate test.  It was another moment of truth: Does what I teach and believe in really work?

I knew I needed to skyrocket my own confidence and master how to help people develop powerful levels of confidence not just fast, but “satisfy George Steinbrenner” fast.

(But really, you’re not much different from Steinbrenner.  You have no time for lengthy psycho-analysis or psycho-babble.  Sitting around and talking about things for hours doesn’t cut it in today’s lightening-fast world of performance.  You need things fast.  You want immediate results.)

So I went on a mission.  I was driven by one question:

"What are the fastest, most powerful methods of building confidence and empowering people to reach their goals?" 

Finding the Best of the Best

 I began my quest by taking stock of what I already knew.  A book I co-authored ten years ago called “Heads-Up Baseball” has sold more than 60,000 copies worldwide and is called “the bible for mental toughness” by the #1 amateur baseball publication. 

Many people have told me the book changed their lives, got them to the Big Leagues, or saved their careers, so I knew my foundation was solid.

But I needed to get better.

How do you develop maximum confidence with maximum speed?  My background in liberal arts led me to explore a wide range of areas… 

I drilled my friends, top sport psychologists who work with Olympic and professional athletes, and forced them to tell me the fastest, easiest and most powerful techniques they use to build confidence in World Class athletes;

I re-analyzed the interviews I’d done personally with baseball greats such as Hank Aaron, Pete Rose, Nolan Ryan, and Ferguson Jenkins to uncover the source of their Hall-of-Fame confidence;

I studied and practiced some extraordinary techniques from Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)  - renown for being the fastest change techniques yet devised;

I deepened my expertise in yoga (I had become a certified yoga teacher in 1996) to identify the few key moves that help develop that winning, confident feeling;

I picked the brains of martial arts experts after I took their classes.  The martial arts are all about helping people feel powerful and confident, so I found a master teacher and adapted his material to create Western, sports-minded exercises;

learned hypnosis.  I knew by then that to change a person fast and powerfully, you need to by-pass the conscious, “let’s-talk-this-through” part of the brain and get right at the command center of your life.  If you’ve ever been to a hypnotist stage show where otherwise normal people do crazy things like dance romantically with a mop in front of hundreds of people, you know there has to be something to this.  I found out the real deal on how to use it to unleash personal power.

Putting the Best to the Test

Every technique I tried had to pass two tests.  First, did it help me?  The exercise needed to build my confidence the way squats build muscle in my legs.

If an exercise was effective, simple and fast, I kept it.  If it wasn’t, I ditched it.

I then tried them with my clients.  The techniques that got great results stayed, the rest got the delete button.

One key theme ran throughout all of them, a principle that Home Run King Hank Aaron told me was vital to his breaking Babe Ruth’s coveted home run record.

As we rode around Atlanta in his car talking hitting, Aaron explained (in great detail) the mental secrets he used to separate himself from his peers.

Then I asked him a key question: “So this incredible focus and confidence you had, did you always have it or was it something you learned?”

“Oh, you learn confidence and focus,” Aaron told me excitedly, “it’s just like learning your ABC’s.  You learn it through repetition.”

Condition Through Repetition

Aaron had laid it out clearly: You condition yourself to be confident the same way you condition your body to be fit! That basic principle is the cornerstone of how to build maximum confidence with maximum speed. 

You know this principle already – that when you repeatedly do something your ability to do it grows.  The principle just hasn’t been applied to confidence training the way it has for physical conditioning.

For example, if you want to build upper body strength, push-ups can do the trick.  Do them consistently and before long your chest and arms will be bigger and stronger.

You condition your confidence following the same principle: Repeat a few basic exercises and you build your “confidence muscles” in very little time.  This isn’t rocket science.

Actually, I’ve found it much faster to build confidence than to build real muscle.  Plus (and this is big), confidence conditioning exercises are fun and feel great – they don’t make you sweat or cry out in pain.

The only problem is that although people generally understand basic physical conditioning principles and exercises, people don’t know confidence conditioning principles and exercises.

How To Condition Yourself for Confidence

The best way to learn physical conditioning is with a personal trainer.

I hired a personal trainer a few years ago and was astonished at what a wimp I’d been for years in my workouts.  I know how to train.  I’d taught weight training and conditioning for years at the college level.

But one workout with Jose and I was humbled.  Wow, I’d been selling myself way short – I was capable of so much more than I was doing!  But I wasn’t embarrassed (for long).  After all, Tiger Woods has a coach.  All top performers do.  

Why?  Because a coach teaches you key principles and gives you exercises that give you the shortest, most direct route to your goal.  A coach challenges you to do more than you would normally do on your own. 

The same is true for confidence conditioning.  With the help of a trainer, you quickly learn the key principles and exercises you need to build your confidence, then you get the support, encouragement, and accountability that has you actually do the exercises!

I am, in effect, a confidence conditioning personal trainer.  A “Confidence Conditioner.”

So here’s the big idea my research and experience led me to:

     1. Take the “best of the best” confidence building exercises that I’ve learned in over 20 years of research and practical experiences – the ones that really work, the ones that helped me overcome my setback with the Yankees; 

     2. Combine them into a step-by-step program that creates maximum confidence with maximum speed;

     3. Serve as a confidence conditioning personal trainer to people wanting to enjoy the many benefits of greater confidence; and finally,

     4. Create a structure of support, like a mental gym, where people are supported in doing “workouts” that condition them to create extraordinary levels of confidence.
